Error client log shows "An imminent failure indicates either bad privileges or WOW64"

  • This error message originates from outside of Magnus Box, and has to be interpreted.

Cause: This error is a result of the client background service not having permission to take a VSS snapshot.

The Magnus Box client-installer explicitly grants permission to take VSS snapshots.

  • Check the Magnus Box service user account in services.msc. It should be running as the 'NT SERIVCE\backup.delegate' account. This may have been removed by a group policy.
  • If the device is an Active Directory domain-joined machine, then the AD controller may be enforcing a set of permissions which over-ride the ones that the Magnus Box installer has created.

Solution: None directly through Magnus Box, as an external action has changed the permissions.

Work-around: Reinstall the client software to ensure that the client has the correct permissions. Monitor the logs for the same error message - this will point to the time-range in which the permissions changed, and enable a remedy to be constructed and applied.
