Disaster Recover - Client Device Loss
If the user loses a device, then all that is needed to recover backed-up data, is the following:
- Install a fresh copy of the Magnus Box client software on the new device, using the old device username and password.
- Verify that the new device shows as 'Online' in the admin web interface -> Accounts -> Users -> name -> Devices.
- Perform a 'Restore' function as needed.
- Add the old device's Protected Items to the new device. On the user's Protected Items tab, use Copy and Paste to copy each Protected Item's settings to the new device. See Change of hardware causes registration dialog to appear.
- When complete, 'Revoke' the old device-listing in the admin web interface -> Accounts -> Users -> name -> Devices.
Restore a Protected Item from a different device
You can restore another device's backups on any device that's logged in to the same user account, for example to test a restore or to recover a lost laptop's files onto a replacement.
- Install the backup app on the second device and log in with the same user account (username and password) as the first device. If it's a new device, this registers it to the user.
- In the backup app, open Restore, tick Show items from other devices, and click the refresh button (top right). The first device's Protected Items and snapshots appear. Magnus Box adds a temporary Protected Item entry on the second device while the restore runs.
- Choose the snapshot you want and restore it to a location of your choice.
- A device only counts toward billing if it has Protected Items or runs a backup.
- If the user has a Policy that adds default Protected Items, the second device gets those Protected Items when it registers, and then it does count. To avoid that on a test device, temporarily remove the Policy from the user before the device registers for the first time.
