Guide - Creating a Disk Image bootable USB drive
A bootable USB drive (Recovery Media) lets you start a machine that won't boot, run the Magnus Box Application from it and restore a Disk Image backup onto the machine's disks. Make one before you need it, from any working Windows device that has the Magnus Box Application installed.
Before you start
- A USB flash drive of at least 2 GB and up to 32 GB. External USB hard drives don't boot on all hardware.
- Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) must be installed and available on the Windows device. You can check with the
reagentc /infocommand.
Steps
- Plug the USB drive into the Windows device.
- Open the Magnus Box Application on that device, click the three-dot (...) menu, and choose Create Recovery Media.
- Choose WinRE (the default) and then Create as USB. To boot a virtual machine or cloud VM instead, choose Create as ISO.
- Pick the USB drive. To use an external USB hard drive, tick Show all drives.
- Choose whether to copy the device's current drivers into the media. This usually helps the recovery environment work on that hardware. You can also add extra drivers (
*.inffiles), custom files, or a command to run at startup. - Create the media and wait for it to finish.
To use the drive, see Recover a whole machine (bare-metal restore). For every option, including booting and limitations, see Recovery Media.
