Office 365 - Restore

To restore data, select the items you want to recover. The columns shown while browsing vary depending on the item type.

You can preview emails before restoring by using the right-click menu. The preview shows rich HTML content when available, including header fields (From, To, Subject), attachment information, and embedded images.

Restoring Microsoft 365 items to the local PC

Emails are restored as MIME-format files (*.eml). These files open in Microsoft Outlook or in other email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird. Outlook also supports bulk import by dragging and dropping the files into a folder.

When an email contains a meeting invite, it includes a calendar appointment attachment in vCalendar format. These attachments can be renamed to *.vcf and opened in Outlook.

Contacts and Calendars are restored as JSON files. These require further processing to convert to standard vCalendar format (*.vcf) before you open them in Outlook.

SharePoint file attachments, including OneDrive items and Teams files, are found within the associated SharePoint site. OneDrive files can be restored as regular files and folders under the Documents subdirectory.

Restoring Microsoft 365 items back to the cloud

You can restore items to the original Microsoft 365 cloud location or to a custom location. All items are restored with the default retention policy.

Existing emails are not overwritten. If an email selected for restore already exists in the target cloud location, it is restored as a duplicate email.
