Restore from your browser
What it's for
Get files back without installing anything. From Magnus Box 26.10.0, you can restore a Protected Item, or a whole snapshot, from the Magnus Box Web Portal as a download in your browser. That helps when the original device is gone, offline or not yours to sign in to.
Before you start
- You need Magnus Box 26.10.0 or later.
- Restoring for a client: the client must allow it. In the Magnus Box Application, they turn on Allow administrator to restore data. Either of you can turn it off again in the app, and you can also turn it off in the Web Portal.
- The download is one archive file. For a big restore, check the size first and make sure there's room where it's saved. For very large restores, a restore on the device, or Restore Via Mail, may be quicker.
Steps
- Sign in to the Web Portal and open the user: Accounts > Users > [user].
- In the Protected Items table, click Restore... on the item you want.
- Pick the Storage Vault and the snapshot (Latest is the most recent).
- Select the files and folders, or the whole snapshot.
- Start the restore and save the archive when your browser offers it.
Microsoft 365 backups
For hosted Microsoft 365 backups, you can download selected items, or a whole snapshot, as a ZIP or TAR archive the same way. Emails come back as .eml files. See Office 365 - Restore for the file formats.
Verify it worked
- Open the archive and check a few files open correctly.
- Check that the file count and size match what you expected.
Troubleshooting
- No Restore... button: the Web Portal hasn't been updated to 26.10.0 yet, or you're looking at the Devices tab instead of the Protected Items table.
- You can't restore a client's data: ask the client to turn on Allow administrator to restore data in the app.
- Still stuck? Email support@magnusbox.com with the user name, Protected Item and snapshot date.
